A RiderCoach is a dedicated motorcyclist who has made a commitment to self and the motorcycling community by investing significant time and effort to successfully complete the NYS DMV approved MSF/NYSMSP Certification Course*

*From its inception, the requirements for RiderCoach Candidates have been established by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s standards and the Commissioner’s regulations for driving schools (Part 76.15) and for the conduct of the motor vehicle accident prevention course (Part 138.7)

How do I become a RiderCoach?   

 

  • Contact Learn 2 Ride, Inc and express your interest in becoming a RiderCoach  

  • Observe a complete BRC RiderCourse with a veteran RiderCoach 

  • Submit an application, DMV Abstract and proof of High School Graduation to be accepted  

  • Invest time in the RiderCoach Candidate Process  

  • Range Activities 

  • Assist with Range Exercise Setup 

  • Introduce Exercises 

  • Ride Demonstrations to show correct path of travel & technique 

  • Demonstrate Simulated Practice Demonstrations 

  • “Shadow” RiderCoaches in action during RiderCourses 

  • NO Actual Coaching of Students is allowed at this point  

  • Complete the RiderCoach Candidate Process 

  • Attend and complete a BRC prior to the RCP Workshop 

  • Complete the pre-course assignment 

  • Successfully complete the RiderCoach Prep Workshop / Certification Course

Application - What must I know to apply?  

 

  • Be at least 21 years of age 

  • Be a licensed (minimum 2 years), experienced motorcyclist   

  • Be currently riding on a frequent, routine basis.  

  • Have good communication skills  

  • Have a high school or high school equivalency diploma 

  • Have no driver's license suspension or revocation within the five (5) years prior to applying.  

  • Have no alcohol related driving conviction within the seven (7) years prior to applying  

  • Have not been convicted within ten (10) years prior to becoming an instructor of a felony or crime involving violence, dishonesty, degeneracy, moral turpitude, deceit, or fraud, including but not limited to theft, forgery, making false written statements, rape, perjury, fraud or bribery   

  • You need to be able to give your time to teach RiderCourses.  Although you will get paid for teaching, you won't become rich in this field   

  • You should have a sincere desire to help reduce motorcycle crashes, injuries and deaths   

  • You must be sponsored by a Training Site that will employ you as an apprentice RiderCoach where you will co-teach with a seasoned RiderCoach.  This ensures that your educational and professional development as a RiderCoach will continue in a safe, consistent and positive manner

RiderCoach Prep (RCP) Workshop / Certification Course   

 

Purpose:  The RCP is currently an 8 day process; typically 2 Four Day Weekends, in which you will learn the nuts and bolts of teaching the MSF's Basic RiderCourse.   

 

RiderCoach Trainers conduct the RCP in accordance with MSF Standards and Requirements.    

Components include:  

 

  • Overviews of the RCG, BRC Classroom & Range Exercises 

  • Practice peer-teaching in the Classroom and on the Range  

  • Conduct and manage the range exercises   

  • Evaluate and coach students as they develop their riding skills   

  • Successful completion requirements:  

  • Pass a Knowledge Test 

  • You must pass it to continue in the program 

  • Pass the BRC Skill Evaluation 

  • The same test you took and passed in the BRC; however, the standards are higher for RiderCoach Candidates   

  • Conduct a complete BRC to 12 new riders under RiderCoach Trainer evaluation                                   

  • Successfully completing student teaching is your final requirement to qualify for MSF and NYSMSP RiderCoach certification 

 

Additional requirements 

  • NYSMSP Policy & Procedures verification 

  • CPR / First Aid Certification
